What is vintage furniture?

Vintage furniture is furniture that is between 30 to 100 years old, however, the term is often used much more loosely, to describe any furniture that has a retro or old-school aesthetic.

Vintage furniture differs from antique furniture, in that antique furniture is older than vintage furniture, and only items that are over 100 years old can be classified as antiques.

“[An antique is] a work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative object made at an earlier period and according to various customs laws at least 100 years ago.” – Merriam Webster

You’d find many different types of vintage furniture in Singapore, one of the more popular (and local) styles is furniture from the British colonial period (from 1867–1942). Vintage furniture from that period had a distinctive English aesthetic, the furniture had rich reddish brown hues, and strong yet simple silhouettes.

Nowadays, you’d be able to find such furniture in English themed hotels like Raffles Hotel and Goodwood Park. Here’s an example from Capella Singapore -
